Shown by a set of numbers-
In the past ten years, the share of China’s marine equipment industry in the global market has surged from 9% in 2010 to 41% in 2021, and it has entered the first matrix in this field in the world;
In 2022, China’s shipbuilding industry ranked first in the world in terms of shipbuilding completion, new orders received and hand-held orders, and China’s shipbuilding industry ranked first in international market share for 13 years;
From January to July this year, China became the only country in the world where the above three indicators achieved all-round growth, and the international market share of new orders accounted for more than 70%, a new record.
Why does the shipbuilding industry in China continue to lead? At the 14thAsian Shipbuilding Technology Forum of the 2023 World Marine Equipment Conference held on October 13, this topic of global concern was hotly discussed.
“The development of China’s shipbuilding industry cannot be separated from the great attention of the Party and the country.” Li Yi, deputy director of the Second Division of Equipment Industry of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said that since the 18thNational Congress of the Communist Party of China, the development of the ship and offshore engineering equipment industry has improved significantly, and a number of large-scale ship assembly and construction enterprises, R&D and design units and specialized supporting enterprises with strong market competitiveness have emerged, and their influence and status in the global shipbuilding industry have been continuously improved.
“China is an active participant in the global shipbuilding industry.” Wang Xingxing, director of the Development and Cooperation Division of the International Cooperation Department of the Ministry of Transport, mentioned that China has been adhering to the concept of global governance, vigorously supporting China’s shipbuilding industry to participate in international affairs and the construction of the international maritime governance system, and promoting the sustainable development of the global shipbuilding industry and related industries.
With the support of the country, China’s marine equipment engineering has risen, and the shipbuilding industry has led the world.
The world’s first LNG dual-fuel super-large crude oil tanker “Yuanruiyang”, the world’s first second-generation sail VLCC “New Aden”... A series of “star” ships launched by China were mentioned in the speeches of the guests.
Liu Xiaofeng, deputy general manager of the Greater China Technical Center of DNV, pointed out that the marine industry is facing many transformations, especially the green and intelligent transformation, and China has strong support in related technical fields and extension fields. “Our company has cooperated with many head enterprises in China in technology.”
China also has the geographical advantage of shipbuilding. Asia is the world’s most important gathering area for shipbuilding and supporting facilities, and China, Japan and South Korea account for more than 90% of the world’s total annual new ship completion.
Iwamoto Yo, consultant of Japan Shipbuilders Society, called for strengthening the cooperation of Asian maritime industry in marine environment and ecological protection, ship energy saving and emission reduction technology, intelligent/unmanned ship technology and digital technology of maritime information, which will be of great significance to promoting the sustainable development of Asian and even world marine industry.
In recent years, Fujian has made gratifying achievements in the construction of a province of marine power.
In 2022, the total output value of Fujian’s shipbuilding industry was RMB 19.2 billion, which continued to maintain a high growth this year. In the first eight months, export delivery value increased by 48%. Our province has also built industrial clusters of ships and offshore equipment such as Minjiang Estuary and Sandu’ao, and initially formed an industrial chain of electric ships that runs through the upper, middle and lower reaches.
“The automobile ro-ro ship, Exploration No.2 scientific research ship and deep-sea mining ship we built are all in the leading position in the industry. At the same time, the group also laid out industries such as green shipbuilding and electric shipbuilding.” Zhao Jinjie, Party Secretary and Chairman of Fujian Shipbuilding Industry Group Co., Ltd. introduced.
On the same day, more than 150 representatives from China, Japanese, Korean, Greek and other countries, as well as representatives from maritime-related international organizations such as ASEF and IACS attended the forum. The forum also reviewed the latest regulations of the IMO in recent years, the development of the world ship market, and the development status of the Asian maeine industry.
The Asian Shipbuilding Technology Forum is the annual large-scale international forum of ASEF. ASEF was established in 2015, and the China Shipbuilding Industry Association rotated the chairman of ASEF from 2022 to 2024. At present, its members include shipbuilding associations of China, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Vietnam, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Turkey, representing more than 95% of the world’s shipbuilding capacity.
